About 14 hours ago, the Detroit Free Press announced the chapter 11 of Borders books & Music. 399 stores to be liquidated, 11,000 jobs and the damage to publishers alone is bad enough, but what about the customers?
My children and I have many fond memories of visits to borders...story times, laughter, good coffee, and great books. I looked back on some old accounts and realized i have spent likely $10,000 at Borders myself. It hurts to see an old friend go.
Was it just changing tastes and online shopping? Was it supposed piracy? I'd say no to the later since my own books have sold better! Yes, better, since i loaded them on torrent sites and went to creative commons. Or, was it the logical thing...greedy overgrowth met by changing times. Bad management has killed many a company, and will do so for ever and anon.
